David Coale Comments on ISD Changing Non-Discrimination Statement

The Carroll ISD's school board has voted to delete specific references to non-discrimination protections based on gender, sexual orientation, and religion in the district’s Student Code of Conduct. While opponents believe the changes are directed against LGBTQ+ and non-Christian communities, the firm’s David Coale notes that federal law still provides protections for those groups.

"Federal anti-discrimination law protects everybody in the United States who's in the school, regardless of what the public statement of the school may be," he said in a CBS-11 interview. However he also cautioned that the change could lead to problems for the district if it is faced with a future lawsuit alleging discrimination.
