Judges Should Think Twice in Keeping Search Affidavits Sealed
After armed federal agents raided a hangar at David Wayne Hooks Airport to seize tax records of Justin Smith, people are wondering if sealed search affidavits should be given a second thought. LPCH Partner, David Coale, believes the opinion is important because it requires federal judges to explain in detail why they are denying public access.
“We are entitled to know what the government is doing, especially in criminal cases,” says Coale, “If businesses or business leaders are the target of an investigation, they should be able to know why their businesses are being raided and who is pointing the finger at them.”
