LPHS Attorneys Secure Significant Pro Bono Win for Family
Following a two-day trial in Tarrant County, LPHS attorneys Jessie Cox and Gloria Cangé gained a verdict totaling more than $258,000 on behalf of a young family who rented a house in Fort Worth. The jury considered evidence showing the landlord conducted a number of fraudulent acts against the family, including forging a fake lease saying they were responsible for all repairs, shutting off their water and refusing to turn it back on, and increasing the rent by 60% when the tenants began demanding repairs.
The jury awarded the family $8,140 in actual damages plus $250,000 in punitive damages against the landlord.
“I don’t think I have felt the power of Lynn Pinker Hurst & Schwegmann as I did today,” said LPHS partner Andrés Correa. “The jurors afterwards told us they wondered how our clients found us, and how glad they were they did. We impacted the life trajectory of a good family, and we will take all necessary steps to assure that the landlord will comply with the jury’s decision.”
