Coale Proposes Clarity to Candidate Debates in Dallas Morning News Opinion Column

In a new opinion piece, LPHS attorney David Coale highlights two critical problems with the current model for presidential debates: too many people talking at once and moderators needing more authority to control the participants. Drawing from his experience, Coale proposes two solutions to actively improve future political debates that would model courtroom proceedings.

“Voters are harmed by a lack of useful information, and democracy is harmed by presenting itself as a yelling match,” he writes. “But with simple reforms — the use of video in multicandidate debates and a realistic ability to turn off the mike — candidate debates can be easily salvaged and turned into a truly beneficial part of the democratic process.”
