Andrés Correa Defending Texas Dream Act in Intervening Lawsuit

LPHS partner Andrés Correa is serving as a lead attorney with a number of public interest groups seeking to intervene in ongoing federal court litigation and defend the constitutionality of the Texas Dreams Act. Since 2001, the statute has guaranteed access to in-state tuition and financial aid for non-citizens and visa holders who graduate from and complete at least three years in Texas high schools and who agree to apply for permanent residency.

“As a beneficiary of the Texas Dream Act, I am honored to have the opportunity to defend it in court,” says Andrés.

Earlier this month the Justice Department sued the state of Texas to block the law, and hours later the state’s Attorney General announced a consent judgment with the federal government to immediately halt the use of the Act.  According to the intervening lawsuit, that agreement did not allow for proper process and creates uncertainty for impacted students, colleges, and universities. Without the Act, it is estimated that the state’s economy will lose more than $461 million annually.
