SCOTUS Justice Jackson Urges Defense of Judicial Independence in Dallas Appearance

Jun 1, 2026

As part of the Tate Distinguished Lecture Series at SMU, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson warned that threats against members of the judiciary can result in serious damage to American democracy. She emphasized that an autonomous court system, free from political pressure, is vital for equal justice under the law.

“It was an honor for the Dallas Bar Association to co-host 600 of its members to hear Justice Jackson,” says Jonathan Childers, DBA president and LPHS partner. “She reflected on her historic path from Harvard Law to the nation's highest bench and spoke candidly about the realities of judicial service, the role of law in protecting individual rights, and the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping constitutional interpretation.”
