Dallas Morning News Talks to Shonn Brown about School Threats & Student Privacy Laws
Parents in Frisco ISD are on edge after learning that a student disciplined for writing a school threat on a middle school bathroom may return to campus this year. They are demanding more transparency, but schools can’t release information due to privacy laws. The firm’s Shonn Brown explained to the Dallas Morning News that the lack of information can be frustrating, but schools must deal with privacy laws and a student’s right to an education.
"A school has to be comfortable that there is no threat to the safety of the other students or to that particular student who even made the threat in order to allow them to come back to school," said Brown. "That's kind of the balancing act the school has to go through."
