David Coale Comments on Confirmation Hearings for Fifth Circuit Vacancies
Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett and former state Solicitor General James Ho were grilled by Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee in a joint confirmation hearing regarding Twitter posts on a powerful appeals court. Willett posted that he would discriminate against transgender and gay people if he were confirmed to the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
LPCH's David Coale said, "Ho and Willett fit in well with the conservative-leaning court, which has four vacancies out of its 17 active judges. The court handles appeals from federal courts in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi." Coale also said, "The good news is we’ll get the court back to full strength,” he said, adding that there have been “a lot of vacancies for a while, and it's not that big of a court.”
