David Coale Speaks in Podcast on the Constitutional Clash between FEMA and Churches Helping in Disaster Recovery

LPCH partner, David Coale, speaks in a podcast on Overcast on the constitutional clash between FEMA and churches helping with disaster recovery after Hurricane Harvey. FEMA provides financial aid to non-profits who help in disaster relief provided that they meet certain criteria. However, churches cannot access funds because houses of worship are excluded from disaster relief grants.

David Coale comments, "This case is governed by the First Amendment, which says, in relevant part, Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion." The question at hand is, "When FEMA decides to give financial support to certain organizations that assist in the response to this terrible Hurricane in Houston but decides not to give that same support to religious institutions, does that violate the First Amendment?"
